PRE-FILMING CHECK LIST

Martha will work with you during your Pre-Filming Consultation to ensure that you're ready to go for your filming session.

I know what I need to film.

Most auditions consist of 2 contrasting 32-bar cuts and one monologue; usually this means an up-tempo selection, a ballad, and a monologue to best showcases your dramatic strengths. The monologue should be 60-90 seconds in length and be from a published play; it should not be from a TV show, movie, poem, etc.  It is extremely important to check with each program/school to which you are submitting an audition to see specific requirements.

I have a track for each of my songs.

Songs may not be performed a cappella (unaccompanied). Piano tracks, not karaoke tracks, are preferable.  Don’t have a track? We probably have one you can use that can be tailored to your specific cuts.

I’ve worked with my coach to polish my performance.

If you work with an acting/song coach or voice instructor, make sure they’ve put their stamp of approval on your work prior to your filming session.

I have an appropriate outfit to wear for filming.

Wear something comfortable but professional looking, like you would to a recital. When planning what to wear, take into account that you will have your choice of white, cream, blue or gray backgrounds.

I know what the framing requirements are for my audition video.

Framing means the amount of your body that will be shown in the video. Generally, from the knees up is a good shot. However, some programs/schools request specific framing such as a full body shot, a tight shoulders/head shot, etc. Be sure to check if your video needs anything specific.

I know how to slate my audition.

A slate is a spoken introduction. The proper slate for a song is to state your name, the song title, and show in which it appears. The proper slate for a monologue is to state your name, the title of the play, and the playwright.

I know where to focus my eyes and deliver my performance during filming.

Your focus for your slate should be direct-straight to the camera, as if speaking to the adjudication panel. Your focus for your songs/monologue should be indirect-to the left and right or beyond the camera, as if playing to an audience. Practice both direct and indirect focuses when preparing your work.
